Geography

Geography’s Debut EP Cyclone Blows In with Quiet Intensity and Unshakable Heart

There’s a special kind of magic in music that feels like it was written on a long drive through golden fields, or in a bedroom lit only by a soft desk lamp and a heart full of questions. On her debut EP Cyclone, Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Geography—the musical project of Georgia Smith—delivers exactly that: an intimate, emotionally raw collection of songs that unspool like confessions from a friend who knows when to speak and when to simply sit with you.

Out now via COHORT Records, Cyclone is Geography’s quiet triumph that filters her rural roots in Guyra through a lens of urban introspection, crafting music that feels both grounded and gently otherworldly.

We caught up with Geography to talk about the tactile joy of creation, the visual language behind her sound, and why she might just be a platypus in disguise.

Outside of your art form, where do you find inspiration?

A lot of my inspiration comes from trying to figure something out in my head. Usually themes of relationships in love, friendship and family are quite prevalent in my writing a lot of the time but I also get a lot of comfort from nature which you can probably hear in the lyrics.

Where do you think you get your personal power from?

I think I find personal power in the accomplishment of creating something. Even something really simple. I enjoy a lot of tactile tasks like gardening, cooking, drawing and obviously playing an instrument and I think that accomplishment of making something that wasn’t in existence before makes me feel so accomplished, especially if i can share it with someone.

Is there a specific sonic theme, genre or instrument that you draw pure joy from? E.g film soundtrack, 70’s punk, the Roland 808

My mum used to listen to the Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack when she would be pottering around the house which is a great soundtrack and also really precious nostalgia for me.

How does visual aesthetic come to play in your work?

I definitely lean on visual cues especially when producing, I think I always have some kind of image in my mind that helps me find the right timbre and textures to complement the feeling in a song.
