Die 4 Ur Love

Colombian-Canadian singer Tei Shi’s quarantine masterpiece Die 4 Ur Love is the perfect balance of fun and intimate, and a multi-sensory experience. Due to be called Apocalypse before our own apocalypse hit us, it is a suitable second title for this EP as it sums up the lonely, dream-like and fearful past few months.

On Twitter, Tei Shi opened up on the importance of her latest EP: “It means everything to me to be able to have poured myself with all the angst, pain, confusion of 2020 in ultimately a search for something fun and cathartic to connect with U all.” Fun and cathartic is exactly the way to describe the 5 track release. Tei Shi opens with Johnny, an existential bop, which extends a hand to the lonely. Disappear, track no. 3, is a heart-breaking letter of depression to an unrequited love. The final track, Goodbye, seems to be one final song of closure to the past four of mediocre, undeserved love. It wishes goodbye to the old, and lets it know, she’s “something it won’t get again.” If you’re listening on Spotify, Johnny, Disappear and OK crazy play alongside a repeated visual of an Instagram explore page, made up of Tei Shi. Each square acts to create a moodboard, an insight into Tei Shi’s mind, at a time when we feel most distant from each other. This ties into the singer’s use of Instagram highlights. She has a highlight for each song; a collection of promos, clips from the initial writing of the EP, and snippets from her performance at Club Quarantine; a queer online dance party (@clubquarantine). The beautiful and personal touch to this EP is so fun and colourful, but also feels like we’re being offered a peek inside Tei Shi’s diary. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
