SHOT CALLER

Of all the many faces in the world, adorned with their own intricacies and complexities, faces the many perspectives and sights of our own lives. A Shot Caller absorbs the truth of who they are without internalising the identity, story or mask of who they’re perceived to be. The haze of control, dependent on the elements of attachment and involvement are eliminated as a Shot Caller. An embodiment of courage, community and belief. Shifting into the body of a Shot Caller within a conversation with Awar Malek, accompanied with the creation and styling by Laura Mazikana, captured by Jade D’Amico, hair by Saraii Linda and beauty by Tina Matti.

Who are you?

To be completely honest with you friend, I don’t really know how to answer that question; but I do whole heartedly believe that I am living a purposeful life that shapes the person I am. I carry myself with this confidence and awareness of self that is almost bulletproof. I am a powerful force that is guided by the most high with a genuine heart. I am love and laughter, a true supporter, whether we’re crying or celebrating, I will always be there. I am a realist and a dreamer. And most of all a protector as the oldest daughter of my family.

What are your categories?

I am an honest, kind and delightful soul. I am overly observant and just as sensitive so don’t f—k with me. I’m extremely protective of my friends and family. I am passionate, dependable and self-sufficient. I am selective with who I surround myself with and who I consider a close friend, because I don’t think everyone deserves the love and support that I give, so when I give it, it’s not that I expect it in return, but it’s because I believe you deserve it. When your energy is kind, welcoming and warm, I will gravitate towards that and that’s how I go about life. Trusting my gut, going with the flow and being mindful of others, as much as I’d like them to be mindful of me.

Laura created this shoot, and when she created it, she named it “Shot Caller”, the way you embody that name is everything you are.

What is a Shot Caller to you and how do you call the shots in the industry, and in personal relationships?

Shot Caller to me is not being afraid to stand your ground or flinch when others doubt or question your vision/goal or even opinion. It’s about being strong willed and content with being the lone wolf, and not give into other people’s objections and judgements. Calling the shots in the industry and in personal relationship’s is also simple, it’s ultimately about respect, honesty and being open to learning new perspectives. Be controversial and daring. I love being around those who aren’t afraid to speak their truth. I am firm with setting boundaries. If you are willing to compromise yourself for a job one time, not only will you do it again, but you’ll also find a way to justify it. As for personal relationships, people in your life will try to take advantage of you but only if you allow it. Shut it down.

What is your relationship with control?

My relationship with control is still growing, leading me to a liberated state of thinking and being. When it comes to me and only me, in all honesty I love to have control. There are very few things in this world you can truly control, so mastering control over yourself and how you react to the way people treat you, it’s very freeing. When it comes to others and situations I cannot control... it is what it is.

Who can you lean on?

I often turn to my dearest family and friends. I can lean on them and not be afraid to be vulnerable, sad, helpless, doubtful and anxious because they understand me. Behind the go getter, always ready for the next challenge or adventure, is an ambitious young lady that often does not know what exactly is going on. They give me the space to be myself. I am very blessed to have people that care about me deeply, people I know will absolutely do anything for me and I would go to the ends of the earth for each and every one of them.
