Sam Quealy has spent the last month “trying to get a fat ass”. When we spoke with the Australian techno-pop vixen from her Paris apartment, she was in between spoonfuls of Bircher muesli. “I’m at a point in my career where I want to be strong for the performance – even if it means I’ll get in trouble for not fitting into sample sizes!” she smirks. This is the starlet behind the scenes – eyes on the prize with an athlete’s mindset. It might surprise you if you’ve seen her on-stage, where her persona is somewhere between femme fatale and feral cat. The Australian artist’s club tracks are face-melters that will keep you up until daylight – but these days Sam (a classically trained dancer, turned magician’s assistant, turned avant garde diva) is locked in between international tours off the back of her sophomore album Jawbreaker.
