FKA TWIGS ~ KILLER

FKA Twigs has released her newest single ‘KILLER’. While her January 2022 release ‘Caprisongs’ was about affirmation and appreciation; Twiggs writing “it’s bronzer in the sink, alco pop on the side, a cherry lolly, apple juice when ur thirsty, friends in the park, your favourite person, that one sentence somebody said to you that changed everything”, ‘KILLER’ comes with a vulnerable and intense energy. It may come across as a beautifully tempered, pop forward change for the artist but the lyrics convey a dangerous pain;

“Since when did happiness become a sin?
Since when did hurt become deliberate?”.

The release of a snippet of the song on tiktok with a video of her and actor Arón Piper passionately kissing appeals to a broader pop audience, but revealing the full song in her first NPR tiny desk concert the live version strips back the pop layers in favour of strings and a piano, and relies on the singers powerfully intricate voice to convey the dynamic of her internal battle with this love. The deliberate choices speak to FKA Twig’s ability to cross mainstream popularity with her ethereal, other worldly, beautifully alien creative range. Look deeper and there is no shine on her struggle with love. Intensity reigns, and it creates the sonic and emotional awe we have come to expect from her. Her next album will hurt, and we’re ready.
