AFFECT

Stylist Hunter Blue and photographer and director Donna Bertram explore visual variation on a daily basis. In this impromptu series they meet up on the other side of the world and put Hunter behind the lense and Donna in front. Below they speak on 5 doctrines of the visual world they work with and how they put them to use.

INTENSITY

D: Once I see a visual image in my head, the excitement of putting together the different elements of what I want to create takes over and the fear wanes.
H: I hold trust in my vision to help execute the best representation and quality work I know I can create.

COLOUR

D: My photos are set up to have a cinematic tinge to them…. I am either attracted to highly saturated photos where tones are bright or more pastel toned photos where tones are quite washed out.

H: Whether it be dim lighting with bold colours to create contrast or going against what you think may not work and creating something that seems wrong in so many ways but shines through in the end.

DIRECTION

D: I create backstories and communicate them with my team so that everyone is on the same page and the subjects can tap into their feelings

H: Comfort and lightness from myself set the tone for how people view my work. It should flow through.

MOVEMENT

D: I create movement by thinking of posing as one long fluid dance. That way, you are never stuck on what to do because there are so many different ways to express your face and body when you are in a state of flow.

H: Choosing the right silhouettes, flowing garments, draping, small details can create more movement than you think.

ILLUMINATION

D: Connecting with friends, family, lovers and strangers illuminates me. Music illuminates me. Cinema illuminates me. Fashion illuminates me. Dance illuminates me.

H: Passion and inspiration, the feeling I get after creating something beautiful and executing a vision of mine.
